We all need a break at times. There is no point in being the leader who works themselves into the ground. Having a healthy work/life balance is vital.
Sanity Savers-Getting away for a bit is great to clear the cobwebs from the grey matter....keeps us from going all 'Jack Nicholson' on everyone.
Pause for Perspective-Having a break away from the frantic, the hectic and the deadline(s) can give you time to pause and see how things really are-you can redress your perspective. We took time out in the amazing city of Xi'an. Seeing a 2000 year old city-walking on its wall (it took four hours and a bit more by the way in the heat...my feet hurt a tad afterwards) really puts in perspective how people see the world. Burying thousands of clay warriors to protect you when you are dead is a perspective that stunned me. Committing to the project and then not living to see it out-brought it home how we need to ensure that we stay healthy-keep going and not let the little stuff bother us.
Lean on your wife (build your support base)-my amazing other half is so incredible that she not only keeps me going but she helps my thought processes as well. I know i can discuss any work related issue with her and will help me to see a way through it. I am eternally greatful for someone as amazing as her to keep me right side up.
As my mother told me: always Remember to Breathe-admitedly as i have a cold at the moment that is a little difficult. Standing on the City wall and watching thousands of people queuing to get on buses to go and visit families for the Golden Week holiday was amazing to see. If i was down amongst them i would find it difficult to see the wood for the trees (or people...or buses)...once again with a deep breath i can see from a different perspective. By the way...it is amusing sometimes but not all the time when people you havent met wish to have their photo taken with you...some can just grab you and 'snap'...i guess that is what those 'celebrities' have to face daily.
