Taking some time out of your day to just walk around your business is an important part of being a Leader. It is amazing what you see...who can you help?...what is going on?...are the plans in progress? John Maxwell called it...leading by walking through the crowd. I can see my staff doing cool stuff with their students. I am able to interact with them in their rooms-spaces-getting to know them more and how/why they do the things they do. Able to see the students working...seeing the same students i teach in a different subject-how are they behaving-what is different? why?
It is amazing what you see and what you learn just by walking around.
Seeing new ways of doing things-different approaches to common thoughts and also new avenues that could/should be explored. It is important not to get stuck in your office everyday-trapped within the class cubicle like it is your own 'labrinth'.
Sometimes simple is better-At times we are 'wowed' by the new and the technical-even something as simple as cleaning can be done as easily with a bucket of soapy water and a cloth-no need necessarily for fancy chemicals and multipurpose weave cloths. The old adage was 'Keep it Simple' perhaps this could be re-worked as 'Sometimes Simple is Better'. Why go to big/expensive lengths to achieve a small task-hitting in a nail can be done with a range of tools but simply a Hammer is the best.
Look for Leadership in others-everyone has an idea/thought how things could be different/better. Ask them-involve them get them to lead projects investigating a possible 'better' alternative. Engagement will aid productivity. Developing teams with leaders and you as an overall facilitator and 'lead-leader' is a great approach to maximise the potential of your team.
If Brute Force is needed-aim at the weakest part-when you need to shore up your defences, critically evaluate a proposal-weigh up the strengths and weakness and use your strengths to target the weakness. Turn the best members of your team into trouble shooters-get them to shore up the weaknesses-using their strengths.
Have some fun with it-Your team will need to enjoy their work-work to live not live to work. Work should be a pleasant experience-with some stress and competition thrown in-like a sport-should be tough-challenging-demand practice-look for perfection of individual skills-build team work and build team plays (ways of achieving goals)-but ultimately they need to enjoy what they are doing-have a laugh-have a sense of humour-use some emotional intelligence to connect and let th
